A Vertical Community Goes Car-Free

Located near Stratford International Station, Manhattan Loft Gardens is situated between one of London’s largest and newest transport interchanges and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The driving idea behind the design was to foster a vertical community, promoting social interaction and reflecting the area's diversity. Innovatively stacking 1-, 1.5- and 2-story apartments creates a unique range of residential typologies, taking cues from the high ceilings of Holland Park, the warehouse lofts of Clerkenwell and apartments of Docklands. Community emphasis is enhanced at ground level, where the triple-height lobby is shared between hotel guests and tower residents. At upper levels, cantilevers form skygardens and terraces, providing communal spaces with a variety of landscape treatments, promoting different activities. The building is served from a local trigeneration plant via a district heating network, and the extensive availability of public transport on the site allow this to be a car-free development.
